In December 2017 Chaos Engine were commissioned to create a Christmas tree that was to stand on top of one the tall silos in Odense Harbour. We took on the assignment but were not completely sold to the idea of the tree. Any tall structure in Denmark has its own Christmas tree in December, and by now its message is almost void of meaning. We thought that there was a much better alternative to a tree when it comes to lighting up the night sky during Christmas.
Naturally, it had to be a star. And when we spoke to our client about it, they totally bought the idea. We started by constructing a 12 sided die to which we added 12 aluminium rods and 30 wires to give it the structure of a star with a diameter of 3 meters.
To the wires, we added long, programmable LED strips, which made the star tingle and spangle and light up the night sky in a festive way.
